Clarity Grade

VVS 1&2 Extra Fine Quality. These gems have microscopic inclusions which are difficult - slightly difficult to see under a loupe with 10x magnification.

VS 1 Very Fine Quality. Small pin-pricks are just visible to the scrutiny of the close naked eye. However, the beauty of the gem is not diminished in anyway.

VS Fine Quality. Small pin-pricks and feathers are just visible to the scrutiny of the close naked eye. However, the overall beauty of the gem is still not diminished

SI1 Good Quality. These gems have inclusions which are fairly easy to see to the close naked eye. However, the overall beauty of the gem is still high.

SI2 Good to Medium-High Quality. These gems have inclusions which are fairly easy to see under the close naked eye. These inclusions are usually not really visible at an arm's length.

Included 1,2&3 Medium to the lower qualities. Included gems with internal features that range from eye visible to very easily seen to the naked eye.

VVS1: Very high quality & free from inclusions.
VVS2: High quality with very slight inclusions.
SI1: Good quality with sight inclusions visible to the naked eye.
SI2: Inclusion becoming more prominent to the eye.
SI1 & 2: Highly Included.

Transparent - Transparent stones allow light to pass through them without diffusing (scattering) the light.

Translucent - Translucent stones allow light to pass through them, but the light is somewhat diffused (scattered).

Clarity Explained

For the new gem buyer, terms like “VSI” and “eye clean” may at first be somewhat confusing. Below is a list of generally used definitions to describe 'clarity' in gemstones:

Clean - Stones that are free from inclusions.

Eye Clean - Stones that are clean to the naked eye.

Crystal Transparent - These stones are transparent and have excellent brilliance. They might have some minor inclusions, common to that particular gem type, but these do not deter from the rarity and beauty of the stone. The word “crystal” is commonly used in all major global gemstone sources.

VSI (very slight inclusions) - While these stones have some small inclusions, they will not diminish the brilliance and beauty of the stone when set.

SI (slight inclusions) - These stones have some inclusions visible to the naked eye but not to the extent of affecting the brilliance of the stone.

Included/PK (Pique) - These stones have some larger and/or many minor inclusions, somewhat diminishing the brilliance of the stone.

Transparent - Transparent stones allow light to pass through them without diffusing (scattering) the light.

Translucent - Translucent stones allow light to pass through them, but the light is somewhat diffused (scattered).
